"You have to begin to lose your memory, if only in bits and pieces, to realize that memory is what makes our lives. Life without memory is no life at all, just as an intelligence without the possibility of expression is not really an intelligence. Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our action. Without it, we are nothing."

Luis Buñuel (1900-1983), Spanish filmmaker. My Last Sigh, ch. 1 (1983).

On the last Monday of May each year, the United States celebrates Memorial Day. Originally called "Decoration Day," it began as a time to remember those who gave their lives in battle in the service of their country. Many Americans use it as a day to remember any friend or loved one who has passed on.

Despite its origins, Memorial Day is anything but solemn. It is celebrated with picnics, parades, fireworks, and fond remembrances. It also marks the "official" beginning of the summer season. Break out those white shoes!

To our loved ones who have left this world: we will never forget you. To the many strangers who have died for us, we thank you.

Eulogy for a Veteran

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the Gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
