August 8, 2001

This issue is devoted to the memory of E.W. Redmond, Tulsa’s “Kite Gypsy.” E.W. left this world on July 26, 2001. His sudden passing was a profound shock, and prompted several people to send us their poetry and memories of E.W. All are featured in this issue.

The feelings and emotions in the poems and stories we received made our own story about E.W. seem shallow and weak. We barely skimmed the surface of his essence; the people who have contacted us truly captured it. Please read their works, and know that for a brief 55 years, a truly wonderful man walked quietly on this planet, bringing joy wherever he went.

A brief side-note: I went out this afternoon to run an errand. The day was hot and still. As I turned in to my neighborhood, I saw something in the sky. As far as I could tell, it was just a bit of newspaper - but the way it soared, ducking and darting so high above, without a hint of a breeze - reminded me of E.W.’s kites. Maybe it was just a bit of litter - but I’d rather think it was E.W., letting us know he’s still up there, in the sky, smiling down at all of us.

E.W. - we miss you.

Cheers,
The Cherrymagic Crew
