April 15, 2001

What a week it’s been! Quicker than you can say “Flame War,” cherrymagic.com found itself the proud recipient of a listing at Yahoo! To those who are just discovering us, welcome, and we hope you’ll join our regular visitors. Let us know what you want, and we’ll do our best to deliver.

In this issue, we’re thrilled to present our first work of fiction, Lunch, No Oysters, from web veteran Alex Keegan. You may know Keegan for his series of novels involving heroine, crime-fighter Caz Flood. If you don’t, he’s well worth discovering, and we’re glad to have the privilege of making the introduction.

This month’s artwork is, we were happy to learn, a small portion of a series of works surrounding little-known Goddess Baubo. We’ll keep you up to date on what artist Tempest produces next.

Until next time, stay dry, stay sane, and be excellent to eachother.

The Truth About “Psycho Ex-Girlfriend”

The truth about psychoexgirlfriend.com: Is it a hoax?

Probably not - except the girlfriend’s not pyscho.

As a conscientious objector in the war between the sexes, I try to avoid topics that serve only to divide men and women. Recently, however, I found myself staring at a virtual car wreck, and I couldn’t tear myself away. The same bug has bitten thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people. I’m talking about www.psychoexgirlfriend.com.

The web’s latest craze was, ostensibly, created to help twenty-five-year-old protagonist Mark McElwain, of Dallas, Texas, get over the pain of a break-up with thirty-eight-year-old “Jill,” - pain that supposedly was exacerbated by “psycho” Jill leaving in excess of fifty voice mails over a twenty-two day period.

I first came across the site while doing research for an interview - it was a radio station’s featured site. It sounded amusing, and I mentally filed it to look at later. Then I forgot about it - until one morning, when McElwain was featured as a guest on the local morning show. Before the interview, the station aired several of the voice mails - and I laughed. The chick sounded pretty darned psycho. I flinched to recall the time (or two, or three, or…) I’ve behaved that way myself. I hoped I was laughing with her.

Then I dug a little deeper. What I found was not a humorous yet self-serving foray into web publishing. I found a frightening, ugly place seething with rage, ignorance, and hate. (more…)

April 1, 2001

We’re excited about this issue - no foolin’! Cherrymagic leaps into April with an exclusive interview, shiny new message forums brimming with interesting stuff, and our very first comic strip, updated daily.

But don’t let these flashy trappings fool you - we’re still the same deep, thoughtful, concerned cybercitizens we’ve always been. Along with continuing to provide you with narcissistic ramblings and the occasional original idea, we’re upping our coverage of sex in the news, and we’ll bring items of interest to your attention in the forums. (You’ll still be able to read the latest twisted headlines right here.) Please join us and share your thoughts and opinions.

As always, enjoy!
